Obscure Terms
Moderator:daniel
I am looking for some slightly ambiguous terms for the new paper. Just wondering... who here knows what the following are:

Vitriol I have heard before but cant remember what it was.
Orichalcum has another name that is "Red Mercury" if memory serves, the others I haven't heard before, and only can imagine what they mean.
Have heard of Magus, if it refers to Magi a magician, like a wizard. Incantator sounds like someone making incantations which would take more time to take an effect than magicians magic what would be instantaneous.

Re: Obscure Terms
Vitriol has something to do with sulfuric acid and could be used with metals such as copper iron or zinc.
Sidus Igne is much harder to figure out. But if I had to guess it would be "star fire".
Causale Nexus is Causality or causes and Nexus or point of crossing so that I would guess it would be a place where all the forces of nature are in balance.
Artium Obscurorum is art or the arts and obscure so that I would guess it would be the obscure arts or unseen picture.
Orichalcum is an old word that now know as copper. It originally had a meaning of mountain copper.
If I had to say where you could find these items it would have to be in a Latin book that describes alchemy that most likely very old.
Magus is a magician or wizard who is very knowledgeable. Incantator would be someone who just knows spells and the language needed to produce the desired results. Veneficus could be a potions master like Snape in Harry Potter.

Re: Obscure Terms
- Vitriol - anger/rage?
- Sidus Igne - latin, no idea... assistant?
- Causale Nexus - point in time when a decision is/was made?
- Artium Obscurorum - something obscure? A museum of strange things?
- Orichalcum - I recognise this word, possibly from Etidorhpa or another older book, can't think what it is though.
Incantator = creating spells or someone helping a magus?
Veneficus = ...?
That was all off the top of my head, they seem like pretty good ambiguous terms to me.
Jones: [looks at Sallah] You said their headpiece only had markings on one side, are you absolutely sure? [Sallah nods] Belloq's staff is too long.
Jones and Sallah: They're digging in the wrong place!

Re: Obscure Terms
I was wrong about Orichalcum, I mixed it with Cinnabar. I had been looking some info on those perhaps the same day and got them mixed up. Looked up Vitriol on wikipedia which could be Glass or Glassy, later it became sulphate and "oil of vitriol" is sulphuric acid.
Re: Obscure Terms
What I was after was some terms that were generally not understood, so the reader would have to do some research to understand them--which would then bring the proper context to what I am relating. If they didn't, then they're off to the nearest "dead end."
Looks like these work just fine!
