Advanced reading and learning techniques

Post by deepfsh » Wed Nov 21, 2012 12:55 pm

Hi, everyone,

currently, I'm studying Rod Bremer's The Manual and reading Paul Scheele's PhotoReading, and I've already read Tony Buzan's Mind Map Book and tried his awesome software iMindMap 6. One of the things that most impressed me was the (first and most important) chapter on meditation in Bremer's book. It contains some meditation techniques which David Wilcock also talks about in his lecture Access Your Higher Self. It was also curious to see the effects of photographic memory in two Derren Brown's shows.

I would like to know if anyone is actively using these techniques and could recommend additional resources or advice regarding this topic.

Best wishes,

This is a list of "top 10" study guides. I added two more books, as recommended by the author of the first book. Some alternative ways of training may also include lucid dreaming, OBEs, Derren Brown's method mentioned in my previous post, and sleep-learning (incl. Edgar Cayce's "method" of sleeping on a book under the pillow). Try them, see if they work, and share your experience if you want.

1. The Manual: A guide to the Ultimate Study Method (Rod Bremer, official page)
2. Super Memory - Super Student: How to Raise Your Grades in 30 Days (Harry Lorayne)
3. Remember Everything You Read: The Evelyn Wood 7-Day Speed Reading & Learning Program (Stanley D. Frank)
4. Breakthrough Rapid Reading (Peter Kump)
5. What Smart Students Know: Maximum Grades. Optimum Learning. Minimum Time (Adam Robinson)
6. How to Study (Ron Fry)
7. How to Become a Straight-A Student: The Unconventional Strategies Real College Students Use to Score High While Studying Less (Cal Newport)
8. Study Smarter, Not Harder (Kevin Paul)
9. How to Study Program (Ron Fry and Beverley Butler)
10. How to Win at College: Surprising Secrets for Success from the Country's Top Students (Cal Newport)

11. Accelerated Learning (Colin Rose)
12. Superlearning (Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder)***

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

The Two Must-Have Books

Besides the above mentioned Ultimate Study Method, Scott H. Young's book Holistic Learning (YT channel) is one of the best out there. I would highly recommend these two books, and you can find a lot of free material on Young's website. Strategy - method - habit.

Study Tools

- Livescribe SmartPen
- Brainscape
- ExamTime
- Wunderlist (keeping track of your short and long-term goals)

Self-Education Websites

- Do-It-Yourself Degree
- MIT Stellar (additional 'public' classes with free learning material)
- use VideoLAN to speed up lectures to save time
